Fairfax resident two kids through the local public schools from K-High school. Excellent results. Part of the reason I settled here with my newborn (now college graduate) was the schools and the quality didn't disappoint. Why are you looking at schools in Mill Valley? Private school wise look at the saints in Fairfax/San Anselmo. San Dominico and St. Anselm.

The thing I love the most about Fairfax is the total lack of need to drive. I work in the county now and commute by bike. When I get home I walk to the store, movies, pub, restaurants, bars. Even when I worked in SF I loved pulling into the driveway and knowing I wouldn't have to get in the car again

Fairfax is a down to earth vibe, never felt the stupid competitiveness that you get in Mill valley, Tiburon, Kentfield.

Fairfax is pretty kid-centric. Lots of kid friendly parades, gymnasiums, kid welcoming art studios, and of course outdoor stuff. Intramural sports, outdoor stuff, and art. That's Marin in a nutshell. Great for many kids.

My experience with two communities in Marin:

Fairfax as a renter for 20 years. Great community connection. Fairfax Festival, farmers market, lots of eating and drinking gathering places that encourage connection. I loved my time there and miss it.

San Rafael Park/Terra Linda area for last year after purchasing a home. It's much more traditionally suburban than Fairfax. You have to make the effort to get to know your neighbors, but with that said it's been incredibly welcoming. There are gathering places centered around food and drink (Ounces at Northgate, Monks Kettle, etc) but also lots of connection around dog parks and hiking trails.

If I could take my house and place it in Fairfax I would LOL. But no regrets on the move.
