LookyLOO Review of Fairfax, CA

Fairfax is one of the most distinctive towns in Marin. It’s known for being a little offbeat, a little wild, and deeply rooted in local culture. Unlike other parts of the county, it hasn’t changed much. That’s exactly why people love it.

The downtown is small but full of vibe. You’ll find record stores, bars with live music, and restaurants that have been around for decades. Murals cover alley walls. There are bikes outside every café.

Fairfax is proud of its independence. It’s not part of a chain-store culture. Most of the town is zoned for single-family homes, and there’s a lot of open space around the edges. People who live here tend to be longtime residents, artists, teachers, or professionals who’ve chosen a quieter pace.

Lifestyle in Fairfax, CA

Fairfax feels different from most towns in Marin. It’s relaxed and a little unruly in a way that’s intentional. People care deeply about local issues, but they don’t take themselves too seriously. The town has a DIY quality to it—whether that’s how someone built their garden fence or how events get organized with handwritten flyers.

The downtown is small and walkable. People live close enough to grab groceries, stop by the library, and catch a show at the local theater without needing to drive. There’s usually music coming from somewhere, and the shops are mostly locally owned.

The town leans progressive and community-minded. You’ll notice it in the town council meetings, the co-op grocery store, and the way people pitch in for school fundraisers or trail maintenance. It's the kind of place where people stay involved, even when they disagree.

We highly recommend visiting Fairfax and staying in the community at a VRBO instead of a hotel to get a feel for what it's like to live among the locals. You can also receive discounted fares on travel through our partnership with Expedia.

Worklife in Fairfax

Most residents work outside of town or remotely. Fairfax doesn’t have large employers or office parks. Some people work in San Rafael or commute to San Francisco. Others are contractors, therapists, or teachers.

There’s a visible presence of creative workers here, people who build things, make music, or freelance from home. The work culture isn't status-driven, and no one talks much about what they do for a living unless you ask.

The tradeoff for limited job options nearby is having a neighborhood that feels more lived-in during the day. You see people out in their gardens, heading to a café, or working on a bike in the driveway.

Brookside Elementary

Schools in Fairfax

Fairfax shares a school district with San Anselmo—the Ross Valley School District. It's an excellent school district, receiving an "A-" grade on niche.com, with "A's" for Teachers and Academics. Most younger students attend Manor Elementary or Brookside Elementary, depending on which side of town they live on.

Middle schoolers attend White Hill Middle School, which is just over the ridge between Fairfax and San Anselmo. It's a larger school with a strong focus on outdoor education and the arts.

High schoolers go to Archie Williams High School in San Anselmo. It’s part of the Tamalpais Union High School District, which covers much of central and southern Marin. The school has a good reputation for both academics and student support.

Fairfax resident two kids through the local public schools from K-High school. Excellent results. Part of the reason I settled here with my newborn (now college graduate) was the schools and the quality didn't disappoint. Why are you looking at schools in Mill Valley? Private school wise look at the saints in Fairfax/San Anselmo. San Dominico and St. Anselm.

The thing I love the most about Fairfax is the total lack of need to drive. I work in the county now and commute by bike. When I get home I walk to the store, movies, pub, restaurants, bars. Even when I worked in SF I loved pulling into the driveway and knowing I wouldn't have to get in the car again

Fairfax is a down to earth vibe, never felt the stupid competitiveness that you get in Mill valley, Tiburon, Kentfield.

Downtown & Central Fairfax

People who want to walk to everything, first-time buyers, artists and creatives

This part of Fairfax is tightly packed near the main strip—Bolinas Road and Broadway. Homes are modest in size, and the lots are small. You’ll find old cottages, midcentury bungalows, and homes that have been renovated in pieces over time. Some feel bohemian, others feel like starter homes.

Living here means you rarely need your car. Most errands, coffee runs, and school pickups happen on foot or by bike. Music festivals, food trucks, and town council meetings are all right there. You’ll hear live music from your porch on weekends.

It’s a good fit for people who want to feel plugged into the life of the town. Not for those looking for privacy or yard space.
