I grew up in Dunwoody and my parents still live in our same house. I love Dunwoody! It was a wonderful place to grow up and itâs gotten even better! Vanderlyn and Austin are both great elementary schools. People are very friendly. I had a very happy childhood with neighborhood pools, parks, and activities. Yes, there will be traffic on 285. But like someone else said, there are so many cut-through streets that I can get somewhere 5 different ways and avoid traffic. It is a very family-friendly place! Brook Run Park, Dunwoody Nature Center, the Chattahoochee River, Murphy Candler Park (sports), and Dunwoody Village are all great! You will be very happy living in Dunwoody! đ

I grew up in Dunwoody. Pros: Itâs a great place for families. Itâs definitely gotten more diverse over the years (yay). It feels safe, if a little sleepy. I liked having access to Marta to get downtown. Itâs about as close to being ITP as OTP can get.
Kind of a pro and con: the traffic can be miserable, but Dunwoody was built like a spiderweb. There are always cut-throughs and other roads you donât realize connect to where youâre trying to go. I knew at least 5 different ways I could get to school in the morning if one road was congested. This differs from other suburbs like Norcross/Peachtree Corners where it seems like once 141 is blocked, youâre just SOL. Just be decent and donât speed through the neighborhoods.
Cons: in HS we called it âfunwoodyâ sarcastically because unless youâre in the Perimeter area, everything seems to close by 8pm. Besides the obvious Waffle House option, Cafe Intermezzo was our late-night hangout when we could drive and wanted to push our curfew. Thereâs poor walkability. And despite whatever mandate keeps all the commercial signage looking uniform and âcolonialâ (an aesthetic pro imo) itâs still mostly a bunch of suburban franchises/chains, less indie mom n pop stuff.

Dunwoody is Atlanta's best suburb. Its the first town out of ATL, and its highway access puts you proximate to ITP, Alpharetta, Buford Highway, Sandy Springs, and really anywhere else you want to go. It has some of the best schools in the area and really has a pleasant sense of community. Its a place you go to raise kids, period, so if you're looking for somewhere really exciting with walkable entertainment there are other places you'll want to look, but you'll take a big hit on safety, schools and more.
Dunwoody also has lots of parks (Brook Run Park walking trail is just incredible), Dunwoody Nature Center, JCC, etc.
Also, with the boom in Perimeter Center, including PuttShack at High Street, Ashford Lane, and the "Funwoody" Area of Dunwoody Village, I'd argue Dunwoody is getting a lot cooler (while still maintaining the quiet safe vibe that makes it attractive.)
I moved here nine years ago from DC and its the happiest I've ever been living anywhere. I'm thrilled to raise my three young kids here!
