I lived in MDR for 6 years and moved to OC for more space about 6 months ago.
Not sure why people say there’s nothing to do there. If you’re someone who appreciates outdoor activities, it’s a great area. Yeah you might need to get out of MDR for dining or nightlife, but great spots in Venice and Santa Monica are literally 5-10 mins away.
It’s a little tucked away but I certainly didn’t mind driving 5 extra minutes into the marina to get home. Being right on the water was well worth it.
I loved the people - it felt like a community when we’d be out walking our dogs. And no, it’s not just old people like a lot of people here are saying. I’m mid-30s and there were a ton of people just like me. I met some of my best friends there.
I commuted to DTLA around 2017-2018. The commuter bus was lovely and I preferred that 100% over driving. It’s a nice, comfortable coach bus and I just sat back and relaxed. I never worried about my safety on that bus.

I feel like most of the people saying MDR is overrated have never spent much time here lol MDR is nice! Yeah you might have to drive out for night life (also cool bars around) but isn't that the case with most places?
Everywhere on the westside is easily accessible. You never have to fight for parking, you can walk at night & feel safe & you're on the water.
The commute is just as bad at Culver City/Mar Vista/Westchester/Santa Monica.
On the 4th of July you pretty much get your own firework show depended where you choose to live in the marina.
It may be a bit slower than silverlake, but that also means more calm. You can paddle board in the marina too! Which is one of my favorite things to do.

Love living in the Marina - 30something DINKs with a dog. Rent controlled apartment, good people, enough to be here most days and easy to get anywhere we want to go around (SM, Venice, Southbay) Not clue about the DTLA commute - I work from home and my husband works in Century City which isn’t too bad
