Marina of the King
LookyLOO Review of Living in Marina del Rey
A Waterfront Micro-City Where Every Day Feels Like a Vacation
Marina Del Rey is an unincorporated community, not a city, but more than a neighborhood. It's North America's largest man-made small-craft harbor. An incredible feat of urban planning and leisure land development nestled between Venice and Playa del Rey. With a compact footprint (about 1.5 sq mi) and fewer than 10k residents, Marina del Rey feels intimate, scenic, and curated
People love it for the mild coastal climate and the stunning water and cityscape views. Living here means you can paddleboard at sunrise and stroll the marina at dusk; the harbor defines the experience.
Housing Snapshot:
– Median sale price: ~$805K (May 2025), down 11% YoY
– Median listing price: ~$812K (+26.5% YoY)
The housing stock is largely condos and townhomes, with some rental towers, some privately owned units, and a few single-family homes lining the harbor.
Lifestyle of Marina del Rey
Pro SUP Shop
Marina del Rey is all about boating, paddleboarding, waterfront jogging, bike trails, birdwatching in Oxford Basin, dog parks, and kite-flying at Mother’s Beach. Visit Burton Chace Park for live summer concerts, art fairs, and the dazzling holiday boat parade.
Combine that with yacht charters, coastal cafés, and easy transit access, and it’s like living in a permanent vacation postcard.
Schools in Marina del Rey
Operated by Los Angeles Unified School DistrictLAUSD, but with only one public elementary and a magnet middle school. This includes:
Westside Global Awareness Magnet (PK–8)
Marina del Rey Middle Performing Arts Magnet (6-8)
High schools are zone-based within LAUSD; families sometimes opt for neighboring Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District or private schools.
Why You Should Move to Marina del Rey Now
Marina del Rey offers a rare trifecta: coastal lifestyle, walkable harbor living, and solid community infrastructure, all within a small area. It's easier to navigate than LA's more sprawling neighborhoods, delivers upgrade-adjacent waterfront living, and still feels connected to neighborhoods and cities with bigger commercial areas, like Venice and Culver.

I lived in MDR for 6 years and moved to OC for more space about 6 months ago.
Not sure why people say there’s nothing to do there. If you’re someone who appreciates outdoor activities, it’s a great area. Yeah you might need to get out of MDR for dining or nightlife, but great spots in Venice and Santa Monica are literally 5-10 mins away.
It’s a little tucked away but I certainly didn’t mind driving 5 extra minutes into the marina to get home. Being right on the water was well worth it.
I loved the people - it felt like a community when we’d be out walking our dogs. And no, it’s not just old people like a lot of people here are saying. I’m mid-30s and there were a ton of people just like me. I met some of my best friends there.
I commuted to DTLA around 2017-2018. The commuter bus was lovely and I preferred that 100% over driving. It’s a nice, comfortable coach bus and I just sat back and relaxed. I never worried about my safety on that bus.
