Beacon's Main Street stretches far enough that choosing an end of it changes your routine. Toward the Hudson River, the train station and waterfront pull your attention west. At the other end, the old Matteawan area sits nearer Fishkill Creek and the route toward Mount Beacon. The city grew from communities with separate histories, and you can still feel that geography when you're walking around.

A place near the station can make a New York City commute more manageable, though check the walk rather than relying on the neighborhood label. Farther east, access to trails and Main Street businesses may matter more than a quick train connection. Beacon's older buildings can have plenty of appeal, but their upkeep deserves the same scrutiny as the view from the porch.
