LookyLOO Review of Flushing

Flushing is a charming town about 15 minutes northwest of Flint. It's a pretty perfect combination of a friendly active community, with strong schools, and a low cost of living. It's a suburb of Flint but has its downtown so locals get to enjoy time in their own "scene" or pop over to Flint or down to Detroit or Ann Arbor when they crave a busier vibe.

The civic pride in Flushing is evident throughout the year, particularly along Main Street, where much of the city's activities take place. If you choose to live in Flushing, Main Street will be your street.

Lifestyle

People in Flushing tend to have a relaxed lifestyle, with a focus on family, community, and outdoor activities. In the warmer months, you’ll find people gathering at parks, fishing along the river, and enjoying outdoor festivals and fairs the town and businesses throw for locals. Fall brings beautiful colors, and the community organizes seasonal events that add to the town’s charm.

For families, life in Flushing centers around schools and extracurricular activities, like sports teams and the community library’s various programs. Downtown Flushing, though small, has a few restaurants where residents gather, like Kathy’s Restaurant for breakfast or Johnny's Pour House for dinner.

Retirees appreciate Flushing’s pace and the strong sense of community. With plenty of scenic areas for walking, a golf course at Flushing Valley Golf Club, and various clubs and groups for retirees, it’s easy to find ways to stay active.

For recreation & fun there are plenty of parks and activities including:
-Riverview Park: Located right in town, this park offers walking trails along the Flint River, open fields, playgrounds, and a small amphitheater for local performances. It’s a popular spot for picnics, family gatherings, and casual walks.
-Flushing County Park: With larger playgrounds, more extensive trails, and scenic views, it’s perfect for hiking, jogging, or taking the dog out for a walk. The park also has pavilions, making it a go-to spot for family reunions and community events.

-Flushing Candlewalk: Every December, the town organizes this holiday event, where locals line the streets with candles, creating a magical winter atmosphere. It includes music, food, and holiday decorations, drawing crowds from all over the county.

Golfing: Flushing Valley Golf Club offers a great place for golf enthusiasts. It’s not only a popular spot for regular local golfers but also hosts tournaments and events.

Fishing & Boating: The Flint River provides a place for fishing, and while it’s small-scale compared to the Great Lakes, locals enjoy this as a weekend pastime.

Flushing has a great mix of small-town living and access to outdoor play. If living in a small town and being closer to bigger cities works for you, the lifestyle here is very nice.

Schools

The Flushing Community Schools district has an excellent reputation and is a big draw for families. It rates a "B" on niche.com with excellent scores for the quality of the Teachers. It has smaller class sizes and a good mix of extracurriculars for a district this size.

The district has four elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school - Flushing High School. Flushing also has a popular parochial school, St. Robert Bellarmine, for students in preschool through eighth grade.

🦉🦉🦉
Flushing is a quiet town that has the vibe of a midwestern town- situated near Flint, it has a rustic, vintage feel downtown that I always enjoy. There are Movies in the Park during the summer as well as other town events that are always fun!
