The Lake Wylie Man
LookyLOO Review of Living in Tega Cay, SC
The Lake Wylie Man
Tega Cay is a lakefront community about 20 miles southwest of Charlotte, perched on a peninsula that juts into Lake Wylie. With a population of around 15,000+, it’s a smaller city that blends suburban living with amazing outdoor and water recreational amenities. Locals love the water access and big family-friendly vibe. It's a bonus for those craving more city energy, that it's just 20 miles to Charlotte.
Tega Cay is consistently recognized for the aforementioned lifestyle and safety & excellent schools, making it one of the most desirable suburbs in the Charlotte metro.
Lifestyle in Tega Cay
Life here revolves around the lake and community activities. This includes boating, fishing, and kayaking on Lake Wylie. The lake and water views make for beautiful views if you're in the mood for walking the city’s miles of trails and greenways. The Tega Cay Golf Club and Tega Cay Beach Club & Swim Center give it a resort-style vibe, and the city organizes all sorts of festivals, including the Summer Concert series at Runde Park that bring the community together throughout the year.
Most of these festivals are family-focused, like the Fall Festival, held every year at Glennon Center, which has a Halloween Costume Contest, a Hula Hoop Contest, and all sorts of arts and crafts and live music.
Despite being just a short drive from Charlotte’s urban core, Tega Cay feels insulated and small-town, at least for families, in a good way.

Tega Cay is a nice area to raise a family with pretty good schools. Not much area left to develop, so the market is tight with mainly existing homes. No clue what your realtor is talking about.
You should also check out Lake Wylie. Parts of the area can be a difficult commute, so just be sure to map it out.
It was on our shortlist of towns in the area to consider as well. Fort Mill & Clover are also worth visiting. Fort Mill has arguably the best schools in York County & all of SC. York County is the top school district in SC & many families choose this area vs. areas in NC.
Rock Hill is nice too, but I would highly consider private school if you were to go this route. This is ultimately where we landed after touring several private schools.
Other towns are just too far of a commute to Charlotte IMO. 77 gets backed up in the morning starting at 7 and gets better around 8. Leaving at 6:45 or 8:15 will result in a 30-35 min commute, instead of an hour. The commute back in the afternoon is hit or miss, but normally about 30 min after 5:45.
