Living in Kentfield, California
LookyLOO Review of Kentfield, CA
Kentfield is a small, unincorporated town in central Marin. It doesn’t have a traditional downtown or much commercial space, but it’s a deeply rooted residential area known for its schools, tree-lined streets, and quiet wealth. People who live here tend to stay. Homes are spread out amidst the beautiful hills, and a lot of them sit behind hedges or fences. Privacy matters here.
The community orbits around local institutions like College of Marin, Bacich Elementary, and the trails of Mount Tamalpais. Kentfield doesn’t draw a lot of attention from tourists or even Marin day-trippers. That’s part of its appeal for people who want to stay out of the spotlight.
Lifestyle in Kentfield
Life in Kentfield moves at a measured pace. There are no big entertainment centers or shopping hubs. Instead, locals walk or bike to the Marin Art & Garden Center for classes, concerts, and outdoor films. Kids play soccer at Kent Middle School or head to the nearby Hal Brown Park at Creekside for playground time and picnics.
Locals hit Woodlands Market for groceries, Equator Coffees for a quick caffeine stop, and Rustic Bakery for lunch or pastries. These places serve as informal gathering spots. Parents often linger after morning drop-off, catching up at shaded patio tables with strollers parked nearby.
Weekends mean hikes on the nearby Crown Road trailhead, a Saturday run up Phoenix Lake fire road, or just tending to home gardens. People value space and nature here. Backyards are used. Outdoor dining areas and home gardens are the norm, not an exception.
Kentfield doesn’t offer much nightlife, but it’s not hard to head to Larkspur or Mill Valley for dinner or hit up Guesthouse in town. In general, life here is more about home and neighborhood than activity hopping.

Worklife in Kentfield
Most Kentfield residents don’t work in Kentfield. This is a commuter and remote-work town. Many professionals head south on Highway 101 to jobs in San Francisco or across Sir Francis Drake to Marin General Hospital. A growing number work remotely, often in home offices tucked into hillside homes or backyard studios.
College of Marin is one of the few employers based in town, employing educators, staff, and a small support network of maintenance, food service, and administration. Some local families also employ caregivers, landscapers, or household support workers.
The work rhythm here tends to be flexible. That’s part of what draws people in. You can drop your kids at Bacich, head out for a run, and log on by 10 a.m. There’s not a lot of pressure to rush. That doesn’t mean people aren’t ambitious, just that they’ve carved out more control over their schedules.
Schools in Kentfield
Kentfield is in the Kentfield School District, one of the highest-rated districts in Marin, scoring an "A-" on niche.com, with straight "A's" for academics and teachers. Families move here specifically for Bacich Elementary School and Kent Middle School, both known for strong academics and involved parent communities. Class sizes are relatively small, and the school grounds are well-maintained.
For high school, students attend Redwood High School, which serves the broader area and is part of the Tamalpais Union High School District. Redwood has a solid academic record and offers strong sports and extracurricular programs.
There’s also access to the College of Marin, a two-year community college known for its strong transfer rates and arts programs. It draws students from across the county and plays a quiet but meaningful role in the town.
Why You Should Move to Kentfield Now
If your life is centered around your home, your kids’ schools, and access to nature, this is one of the best spots in the Bay Area.

I have a kid in Bacich and Kent Middle. We love both schools. The Bacich teacher my kid had last year was incredible. You could tell she has a genuine heart for the kids. She would get emotional just talking about how much she loves the kids, and was excellent for my child.
At Kent, my other kid LOVES it. She's a bit of an introvert but ended up signing up for all the extra-curricular activities she could handle just because she loves to be around the school so much. Both kids get good grades.
I could nitpick anything but there's nothing big enough at either school to be truly concerning.
The one thing I will call out is you do see the stereotypical "keep up with the Joneses" type mentality for some families. But it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I am very intentional on keeping my kids as grounded as possible considering where we live. Money/stuff don't matter. It's about quality friendships, kindness, and giving back to the community. We try to live by example that way.

Kent Woodlands sits in the foothills of Mount Tam and is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in all of Marin. Homes are large, often hidden behind gates or hedges. Lots are wooded and private. Many homes have backyard pools, outdoor kitchens, or full-scale gardens. Wildlife sightings—deer, foxes, owls—are common.
There’s no through-traffic here, and the whole neighborhood is quiet. People walk the Crown Road trail or ride bikes into Baltimore Canyon.
