Most of the schools are pretty good no matter which route you go, and there’s a bigger city (Grand Rapids) only 45 minutes away which gets big bands and other fun entertainment if you need a fun night out. I moved to Holland from Dallas 10 yrs ago this upcoming January. I can't speak for the "raising kids" part but I can say that I love living here. I work close by and there are more parks and outdoor recreation than you can shake a stick at. I've made a lot of good friends here, as well. The city is incredibly safe and I've never once worried for my personal safety or for my property.

I find that tourist season can be the most frustrating for me, personally. Traffic gets clogged with looky-loos or people not knowing how to maneuver the Lincoln/32nd/State St intersection (my most rage inducing intersection).

We moved here 1 year ago and have loved it. There are so many community events to be a part of and it's extremely bike/walkable (on the south side, at least!). All around a really active place to live with tons of diversity! There are events at least 4 times a week in the summer (farmers markets, yoga in the park, street performers on Thursdays, concerts in the park, food truck Tuesdays, etc!) and being close to the lake is amazing. And we have an awesome Mayor!

My negatives would be the vinegar smell of the Heinz factory (although not constant) and a lot of stores close earlier than I'm used to or are completely closed on Sundays (coming from living in a bigger city).

I have no experience with the schooling systems but I've heard great things about West Ottawa.
