Living in Ross, California
LookyLOO Review of Ross, CA
Ross is one of the smallest towns in Marin, and one of the wealthiest. Tucked between Kentfield and San Anselmo, it covers less than 2.5 square miles but carries a big reputation. Wide, oak-lined streets, deep-set estates, and an almost completely residential footprint give it the feel of an exclusive enclave.
There’s no commercial strip, just the Ross Common with a post office, the fire station, a café, and a few offices. But the town’s charm isn’t in its amenities, it’s in its sense of calm. People come here for the privacy, the quiet, and the school district.
Lifestyle in Ross
Life in Ross centers around the Ross Common and the schools. Families walk their kids to Ross School in the mornings, grab coffee at the little café nearby, and stop to chat under redwoods before heading home. Social life tends to happen through school functions, town events, or personal networks. There’s not much public activity, and that’s intentional.
Nearby trails into Phoenix Lake and Baltimore Canyon are part of daily life. You’ll see locals walking dogs or hiking up toward Mount Tam. There’s easy access to sports fields, the Marin Art & Garden Center, and bike paths that connect to downtown San Anselmo.
Annual traditions like the Ross Fourth of July Parade bring out nearly every resident. Longtime residents also host seasonal school fairs and garden tours. These gatherings don’t draw press, but they matter deeply to the community.

Worklife in Ross
Most Ross residents don’t work in Ross. This is a commuter town or a base for remote professionals. Many residents work in finance, law, medicine, or tech and either commute to San Francisco, often by ferry, or manage flexible schedules from home.
There are a few local jobs tied to the school, the town offices, and support services like gardening or home maintenance. But there’s no commercial core and very little office space.
It’s common to see contractors and service trucks alongside streets during the day, as many homes here require regular upkeep. Residents tend to outsource time-consuming tasks, which contributes to the tight rhythm of home life and privacy that defines the town.
Schools in Ross
Education is one of the biggest drivers for moving to Ross. The town is served by Ross School District, which operates Ross School (K–8). It’s consistently ranked among the top public schools in the Bay Area, receiving an "A+" on niche.com. The school is known for its small class sizes, strong arts programs, and active community involvement. Parents are deeply engaged, and fundraising is robust.
For high school, students typically attend Redwood High School, part of the Tamalpais Union High School District. It has strong college prep programs and a wide range of extracurriculars.
Families who choose Ross are often deeply invested in education. Private schools like Branson School (grades 9–12) are also located here, adding to the academic culture.
Why You Should Move Here Now
If you’re looking for privacy, AMAZING public schools, and a peaceful, green setting, Ross is one of the best options in Marin County.

Ross is an extremely affluent little town with a downtown that consists of a post office, deli and art gallery. Young people in Ross isn’t much of a thing; it’s almost exclusively old money. I know quite a few Italians and German families that live there, and as with Marin in general, Ross has proven to be pretty liberal. In Ross is actually the oldest program for individuals with disabilities. The Cedars of Marin, started on Upper Road right on the border of San Anselmo.

The Ross Flats is the most walkable part of town. It surrounds Ross Common and stretches toward Lagunitas Road and the lower streets near Kentfield. Homes here are elegant but not oversized, mostly early 20th-century homes with big porches, manicured hedges, and quiet side streets.
You’re within walking distance of Ross School and community gathering spots. Families here enjoy being able to walk to drop-offs, bike to Phoenix Lake, or run into friends at the Common. This is where you’ll feel the closest to a town center, though “center” in Ross is still extremely low-key.
