LookyLOO Review of Living in Fishers, IN

Fishers is a fast-growing city of about 100,000 residents located just northeast of Indianapolis in Hamilton County. Once a quiet suburb, it has transformed into a booming community with a strong local economy and a reputation for being one of the Midwest’s most family-oriented cities for its safety and excellent schools. It's featured in the LookyLOO Guide to Most Family-Friendly Cities in the U.S.

Its rapid growth hasn’t erased the small-town character; instead, Fishers has added to the suburban convenience with new urban-style amenities in districts like Nickel Plate. Families and professionals alike see it as a place where they can put down roots with confidence that it will be a good investment for their family and their pocketbook.

Lifestyle in Fishers

Fishers is built for families. Parks and recreational programs are central to daily life, and the city invests heavily in community events such as concerts at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater and summer festivals. The Fishers Parks & Recreation Department manages over 20 parks and a growing trail system, including the Nickel Plate Trail that runs right through town.

The city has a suburban feel, with safe neighborhoods and planned developments, but recent investments have added walkable, mixed-use areas. Downtown Fishers has grown into a social hub with local shops, cafes, restaurants, and cultural spaces that give the suburb some urban energy.

Worklife in Fishers

Fishers benefits from its proximity to Indianapolis (20–25 minutes by car), giving residents access to major employers in healthcare, finance, and technology. Locally, Fishers is developing a stronger economic base of its own. Major employers include: Indiana University Health, Freedom Mortgage, and Hamilton Southeastern Schools. Companies in tech and life sciences are increasingly drawn to its business-friendly environment.

The Launch Fishers coworking hub and Indiana IoT Lab have put Fishers on the map as a startup and tech-friendly city. This makes it especially attractive to remote workers and entrepreneurs who want suburban living without losing access to innovation hubs.

Schools in Fishers

Fishers is served by the Hamilton Southeastern School District (HSE), one of Indiana’s top-rated districts. Niche consistently gives the district an A+ rating.

Fishers High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School both rank among the best in the state, with strong AP programs, high graduation rates, and active athletics.

Middle schools like Fall Creek Junior High and Sand Creek Intermediate also receive high marks.

Parents praise the district’s balance between academics and extracurriculars, particularly the emphasis on both arts and sports, as well as its investment in modern facilities.

For families considering private education, nearby options include Cathedral High School and Heritage Christian School in Indianapolis.

Fishers vs. Carmel

Fishers is becoming a big city. It is still lovely, clean, low crime…but it is quickly becoming unaffordable (the house we built in 2009 is now worth more than twice the amount). The school systems are still top tier but the new school board is quickly working to dismantle it. It is a hot bed of politics.

Carmel is nice but also very expensive. Of course, I don’t know how either of them compare to the west coast. Carmel is more established in who it is, so while they do continue to develop land, they maintain who they are, it seems.

I like could not be happier with what HSE schools has given my typical child but the services for neurodivergence is not up to par, or at least not consistent. Elementary was a hot mess but intermediate was good.

In Fishers, you have a ton of really awesome parks and two public beaches. In Carmel, they have great parks but they don’t feel as inviting. While there is hardly any diversity in either city, you get a bit more in Fishers.

Both cities have great food, breweries, and fun activities to do and both are close enough to Indy to get out.
