I moved to north bay in 1995 when I was 25. I’ve lived in Sonoma county, SF, Mill Valley, and (now & loving it) Terra Linda.

There could be more for kids to do, sure… but there is mini golf and also batting cages at McInness park, plus an absolutely gorgeous skate park. Gravity vault climbing gym near there, too. YMCA and swimming pools. Surfing, kayaking, SUP. Mountain biking and other sports. Smart train with e bike or e scooter has taken my teens on lots of adventures. Only boring people are bored.

There could be more great dining… But there is Insalata’s in San Anselmo, Lotus in San Rafael, Fish in Sausalito—just to name a few.

Main issues are home prices, property taxes, and property insurance. Since I can still swing those so far, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be. But it’s a substantial lift, no question.

I'm late 30s, grew up in San Rafael, and now live here with my wife and daughter. I love it here, but it certainly has its drawbacks. The biggest plus is the access to nature, it's truly amazing as you know. Unfortunately the culture is dominated by older wealthy people, and we all know how exciting that is. Most restaurants and events cater to that crowd, which leads to expensive mediocrity. No worries, the entire bay area is at your doorstep if you're willing to travel a bit. From what you described growing up, I would suggest Fairfax as a place to move. That's the one town that seems to have retained a sense of hippy grit in the face of change. Come on back, hit me up if you wanna hang out. Get the hell out of LA.

I live in Corte Madera and we are looking to move to an area outside LA. (Thousand oaks/Simi/Moorpark areas). I am early 50s for reference with a 11 year old. Make $300k. Basically because of money issues - I make a nice income but my house is small, needs work and we need a second car. But I would agree with others that most do not brag about wealth or flaunt it. Still It's just weird to me that I have friends with $2-4 million dollar homes so I feel like an total imposter. I worry about retirement all the time. I do feel envy how "easy" it must be for them, even if it is a perception.

The "Marin tax"is real here with all contractors charging ridiculous amounts for work. Kids classes for extracurricular are insane. The gym in Corte Madera (Bay club) is comically overpriced for what you get. Just small examples. I am just worn down and will never retire here.

To me Marin area is the best in the USA, outside of expense, but I have to face reality. We simply are not rich enough. As I get older I realize we spend more time at home, so the perfect weather, foodie places, culture, and events in the Bay Area are becoming less important against a nicer home with space and actually having a garage in our case.

So just make sure you have a very very large nest egg before moving back. Living under constant anxiety about money is not fun.
