LookyLOO Review of Living in Clemmons, NC

Clemmons is a village of about 23,000 people located in Forsyth County, just southwest of Winston-Salem. Though smaller than nearby Greensboro or Winston-Salem, Clemmons has developed a reputation as one of North Carolina’s best family suburbs. This reputation is well-earned, thanks to excellent schools and a quiet but strongly family-friendly community. The school system earned Clemmons a featured position on LookyLOO's Guide to Cities with the Best Public Schools.

Clemmons is also just 10 miles from Winston-Salem, so the combination of easy commute and suburban escape is driving growth.

Lifestyle in Clemmons, NC

Life in Clemmons is suburban and family-oriented. The community has a classic small-town feel but with modern amenities — shopping centers, local restaurants, and access to nearby Hanes Mall and downtown Winston-Salem. Tanglewood Park is the centerpiece of local recreation. It's home to two championship golf courses, something novel called "Softgolf", in which the player hits large foam balls around a short course. But that's not all, it also has a pool, horse stables, and year-round festivals (including its famous Festival of Lights).

Clemmons attracts families looking for a stronger community and lower costs than bigger North Carolina cities. It’s quieter than Winston-Salem but far from sleepy, with ongoing growth and new neighborhood development.

We highly recommend visiting Clemmons and staying in the community at a VRBO instead of a hotel to get a feel for what it's like to live among the locals. You can also receive discounted fares on travel through our partnership with Expedia.

Most Clemmons residents commute to Winston-Salem (15 minutes) or Greensboro (35 minutes). Winston-Salem anchors employment in healthcare (Novant Health, Atrium Wake Forest Baptist), education (Wake Forest University), and some finance. The Piedmont Triad, the 12-county region named for Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point, as a whole, has fast-growing opportunities in biotech and advanced manufacturing.

Clemmons itself is mostly residential but has a growing retail and professional base along Lewisville-Clemmons Road.

Schools in Clemmons

Clemmons is served by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WSFCS) system. Schools here are among the highest-rated in the district:

West Forsyth High School is consistently recognized as one of the best in the region, with strong AP programs, athletics, and graduation rates above 90%.

Clemmons Middle School and Clemmons Elementary School both earn strong parent reviews for academics, safety, and community feel.

The area also has access to charter and private options, including Forsyth Country Day School, a well-regarded independent school nearby.

Parents consistently highlight the combination of school quality and affordability as one of the key reasons for choosing Clemmons.

Clemmons is a safe “outside the city” suburb of Winston. If you can afford a home there I’d go for it, its value is expected to increase as Winston grows and young professionals keep moving in. I’m also seeing it’s a good school district too.
