I don't live in Cherry Hill but I spend a lot of time there so I feel semi-qualified to give you an experienced "outsider's" perspective.

Pros:

For a large suburb of Philadelphia, Cherry Hill actually has a lot of parks and green space. You say you work from home and have a dog, so I assume this would be important to you.

Shopping: Cherry Hill Mall is one of the few malls in the area that isn't dead or dying, I'm guessing at least in part because there is still enough money there that shopping remains a recreational activity for some people.

Food: Tons of decent restaurants from diners to pubs to some very good Asian.

Asian community: if this is important to you, you'll find a bigger Asian community than anywhere else in South Jersey.

A really good farm market (Springdale Market) that offers seasonal produce grown both on- and off-premises and a very old-school bakery.

Another poster mentioned nearby towns (Haddonfield, Westmont, Collingswood) with PATCO trains to Philly, but failed to mention that Cherry Hill also has a PATCO station with much better parking than any of the aforementioned towns. The train takes you right into Center City/Chinatown/The Gayborhood.

Cons:

Cherry Hill is notoriously expensive. I never priced out living there, but I think $2,500 a month is barely going to get you a decent apartment/condo, let alone a house.

Other than the extensive parks, Cherry Hill is not very walkable and doesn't have a downtown. It lacks the charm of some older, smaller nearby towns that actually have a town center.

Is there a sense of community in Cherry Hill?

There are community niches, but it is a town of like 70k people. Like there's the Katz JCC for Jewish community, but if you're not Jewish that's not going to be as important. If you have kids in the school system there's PTA, school events, etc. but again if you don't have kids that's not as important.

Do people walk around a lot to the playgrounds, parks and pools?

When I grew up yes. I don't really know anymore. So I guess I'd say the areas are there if you want to use them, but given how a lot of things are on the computer nowadays and that third spaces are going the way of latchkey kids it won't be like a small town of 200 in Alabama.

Are there places to go out to eat and shop that aren't chain restaurants?

There are a good amount of independent restaurants (especially for cultural food like Indian, Thai, Japanese, etc. as well as diners). As for non-chain places to shop... a bit less so. Though again with the times it's just hard for independents to compete.

Pros/Cons - Likes/Dislikes

I guess for Pros you have: pretty safe, good schools, accessible to a lot (Philly, the Shore, Batsto, Haddonfield/Collingswood, the CH Mall), people are fairly educated.

For Cons I would say: a lot of stuff closes pretty early (real lack of 24/7 places but also many places close around 9/10), very "cliquey", kinda expensive (not like NYC expensive but more than Philly expensive), pretty whitebread/basic/bland (even with its demographics).

I live in CH. There is an east side and west side, each having their own HS. I prefer the east, less congestion, far enough away from Rt 38, great neighborhoods and lots of diversity. Rt 70, the main line to Philly and “attractions” is under construction now, so that’s an issue. There’s train lines to Philly, and 45-an hour drive to the beach. Taxes are high, but our kids got great educations, we can drive a 5 mile radius and eat whatever we want, or drive a short distance to Philly for a show or a ball game. We rented a home here before we purchased to get a feel for the area, and there are several condos/townhouse complexes to check out. There is no nice Main Street feel to Cherry hill, which I miss, but Collingswood and Haddonfield are close by for that.
