LookyLOO Review of Burton

Burton is a suburb on the east side of Flint. It has lots of land and the lots, mostly filled with ranch-style homes, are typically quite large. Locals love the quiet vibe and outdoor culture of the community. The city has plenty of its square footage dedicated to parks, which makes it inviting for young families. There is also plenty of shopping, mostly big box and grocery chains but also several smaller boutique restaurants and coffee shops.

The city has seen plenty of growth over the years but residents will attest that it has remained a tight-knit place, which hosts a lot of small gatherings throughout the year. Families looking for an affordable place to buy a home, have room for their kiddos to run around and ride bikes, and spend a lot of time in the great outdoors appreciate what Burton has to offer.

Lifestyle

Suburban living dominates the lifestyle of Burton. It's filled with families and the events and shopping experiences cater to that community. There are plenty of parks for families to play in including:
-For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum is a nature preserve full of fun wildlife, hiking trails, and one of the cooler big treehouses you'll ever see.
-Davison Roadside Parkis another family favorite. Beautiful grounds for summer play that are also used for sledding throughout the snowy winter months.
-Kelly Lake Park is a gem for its diverse outdoor options. There's plenty of hiking, fishing, boating, a beach for just chilling, and a sledding hill for winter.

As noted, Burton has plenty of smaller, community events during the year. This includes the Trunk-or-Treat Harvest Festival during Halloween, with face painting, yard games, treats of course, and more.

Schools

Burton is an unusual small town due to the fact that it is served by four different school districts including:

-Bentley Community Schools is the largest district serving Burton. It rates a "C" grade on niche.com with higher scores for College Prep and Diversity.
-Bendle Public Schools is another district in Burton and it has four schools, two elementary, a middle and Bendle High School. They are all classified as Public Magnets.
-Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools crosses over from Flint into Burton on the east side of Flint. Just one school, Gladys Dillon Elementary School, is part of the district and within the city limits of Burton.
-Kearsley Community Schools is another district that only extends into Burton enough to have a single school over the city line. That school is Weston Elementary School, a small PK and K-1 school that kiddos on the north side of Burton can be zoned for.

I actually moved to Flint/Burton about 6 years ago and bought a house out here and I work downtown! I came from a small town so being somewhere more busy has been great.

The Durant is absolutely beautiful. If you can, maybe look into the homes for rent in the areas too. You are going to want to stay away from North Flint, past the river. Unfortunately, there is alot more blight and crime. It's pretty much considered the closer to south flint/burton the lower the crime. Check out trulia/zillow or even facebook marketplace for different homes for rent. Otherwise, I would look for an apartment in Grandblanc/Burton, still very close.

Yes. There is a bus system but you definitely will want a car, it's easier for our area because Flint is spread out. I live on the burton border and I'm 10 minutes from the mall, 3 different movie theaters, tons of restaurants both downtown, on miller road, linden road, hill rd. They all are in a 15 minute distance. There's the U of M rec center which has an indoor pool, racquet ball, classes every day you can take, cardio/weight lifting. Flint institute of arts offer classes and events. You can't forget the whiting and now the capitol, constantly showing amazing shows/concerts! There is an app called Meetup that is a great way to hear about groups and activities in the area but there are breweries here, museums, art exhibits, a virtual reality arcade, escape rooms, a board game/table top place - you get the idea.

I work in Burton, I love eating at the Halo Burger on Belsay & Court. It also has a Subway attached which is nice for an alternative option. But that Halo Burger is awesome, they have the nicest cashier ever who always makes my day

I would argue that Burton really has three or four discrete communities, largely based around school district (Bendle, Bentley, Atherton and Kearsley), with their own identities. These function largely the same way as you have the wards broken down for the City of Flint.
