What's it like to live in Worcester?

I have personally made this exact move. Came from the Albany area and have lived in the Worcester area for the last 5 years. It is going to be similar to the capital region but better in just about every way minus the lack of Stewart's. The proximity to Boston, providence, Salem, Cape cod, Hartford, Newport, is unmatched. Also, the Natick Mall is like the polar opposite of crossgates where it is actually safe and nice. There is so much more to do in the area and the restaurants in Worcester are much better than the Albany area in my opinion.

I haven't been there since before the pandemic, but I grew up in the Worcester area. Pros are it's cheaper than Boston, good restaurants and bars, diverse culturally, lots of jobs in the area, good healthcare options. Cons are it's been run down for quite some time, divey (which isn't bad if you like that), not super walkable, but downtown is mostly, and there are definitely really sketch areas (like any major city). For nature there's more in the surrounding suburbs, but there are some parks in the city itself.

Even though Worcester is a mid sized city, because it's in Boston's orbit in a densely populated state it has traffic and manners that give off big city vibes. But because it's Central Massachusetts is sort of on the edge of the most populated part of the state you're only a 15 min drive from beautiful countryside where things are a bit slower and there are way less people. It's very lush and summers are amazing.

Understand and accept the differences. No need to announce to everyone once a week that you can't get a good taco. Just accept it now, lol. But you will get fish and chips maybe 5 min from your apartment that will be world class, and better than anything you'd find in London. So just know the food will be different but still good.

Worcester area is geographically gifted if you ask me. Within 30 min drive is over a million people so lots of businesses, restaurants, services, etc. In light traffic 45 min to Providence, 1 hour to Boston, 3 hours to NYC or the White Mountains, 4.5 hours to Philly, 5 hours to Montreal - you get the picture. The East Coast is compact, so fun to explore. Make sure you go into Boston even though driving/parking or the train is a hassle. Boston/Cambridge is super fun to walk around in, not like LA.

I've lived in Worcester for 30 years. I live in the diglis area by the river/canal 15 minutes from the centre. I love that Worcester is a city, that's really a town, that's really a collection of villages. Its small size is its charm. I love the riverside and how well it has been developed over the years. There are lovely parks and green areas. Like all cities the centre has suffered but there are some good businesses here both chain and independent. Pubs, pubs, pubs. Couple of clubs. Good food places and a couple of cinemas. A theatre with Malvern theatre near by. Some good schools and a growing university. Lots of live music. Down sides are definitely traffic which is horrible during the mum runs and rush hours. The hospital and health services are overloaded. Roadworks everywhere all the time. Underfunded policing leading to too many antisocial behaviours but crime levels are low here. I would definitely recommend it if you like the quiet life with enough interest to keep you entertained
