Depends on where you’re stationed, but follow the advice posted here on living North of wherever that is. If you’re on 32nd Street, try and live up the 15. When your morning commute is 10 minutes and you pass the absolute hell-hole that is 15N between 0730-0900, you’ll understand.

North Park is a nice, hip place to be. Same with Hillcrest. Parking sucks as a lot of places don’t come with it, so you’ll be competing with everyone else for street parking, but plenty of people find the trade off worth it.

Mission Valley is a bit more suburban, but a nice place to live. About 20 minutes from everything in San Diego.

Point Loma tends to be a cheaper place to live, but It’s not my favorite.

I had a buddy who lived in PB and said it was a good time. He rented a room, but said that the proximity to the beach and the nightlife were worth it.

You're gonna be in NBSD and you're looking at Temecula? Have you seen how far these 2 places are on Google Maps?! I lived in SD while working at Pendleton and the commute was always terrible. Sometimes it took 2 hours to get home (southbound). Depending on where in Temecula you live, the split going north between the 15 and 215 will add almost 30 to 45 mins of your time even if it doesn't seem like a long drive. If you're going northbound on a Friday, you might as well try to leave for home at 1300 because if you get there by 1600-1800, you'll be driving with people leaving for Vegas.

You're better off at Miramar (still can be a long drive). Look at North Park, Barrio Logan (it's not as bad as it used to be), Balboa Park, Hillcrest, along the 8 or 94, heck even Chula Vista.

Depends where you're stationed. More options if you're on 32nd St. I'd recommend staying away from downtown as you'll end up paying way too much for way too little.

Imperial Beach is great as long as you're not stationed on one of the Point Loma bases. It's ideal if you're on Coronado since the strand rarely ever has traffic. Chula Vista has some good inexpensive (relatively) studio and 1bdr apartments. There's an apartment complex in Chula a lot of junior enlisted at my command live in that's 1800/mo for a 1 bedroom. Chula isn't bad but National City can get really rough. If commuting isn't an issue for you (like you're on a motorcycle, which eliminates the traffic problem entirely) heading east toward Otay leads to some decently priced apartments.
