What's it like to live in Mill Valley?

My family and I ended up in Mill Valley. We were open to southern Marin, but wanted a walkable location. We have a 7 & 3 year old. We needed an "easy" commute to the city, which automatically limited our search, but we've been happy with our choice. The bus service to the city has been reduced since COVID, but it's still an option if you can make it work with your schedule. We've tried it all… driving, biking, ferry, bus… my husband found he prefers biking to the city, when the weather is nice.

We would have loved to live in west Marin or Fairfax, but couldn't do the commute.

Moving from the city, we wanted to still be able to walk to a coffee shop and go out to dinner. We love being able to walk to see live music @ Sweet Waters. We still live a one car lifestyle and have got more into biking, which I never felt safe doing in the Mission. Our kid surfs after school. We can take the "scenic route" and hike to school. It's magical. Now that we are getting more involved with our kids schools, we're slowly starting to find our community. Yes, it can feel very "tech" and "money" dominated, but you can avoid it too. I guess you just need to be intentional. Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

Mill Valley - Expensive suburban Marin town close to SF with small houses that looks kind of like Berkeley. Has a library with redwood trees in the back. One main road with some shops and a pet store. Also has a sandwich place and Whole Foods. Easy access to drive to the top of Mount Tam and outdoor opportunities if you can find any parking.

Go to the libraries and do outdoorsy stuff(kayaking, hiking, cycling). See the turtles at Marin Country Mart. Go see the redwoods in the middle of the road in downtown Larkspur. Go to Petaluma for a day trip. Ride SMART all over up and down. Take the Ferry. Go to Angel Island.

Idk where on Panoramic HWY you are but I guess just be mindful beach/Muir woods traffic jams on weekends and summer. Go visit and get a tour of the Marin Civic Center. Marin county fair is coming up and it’s epic! Go explore Fairfax(food places, weird stores and a movie theatre) and West Marin(Bolinas, Stinson, Tomales Bay hiking). Downtown San Rafael also has a cinema festival and tons of cool shops. Marin headlands is a must too! Ring Mountain has a gorgeous view of almost the whole county and it’s a simple hike. Point Bonita Light house is cool too! Marin art and garden center you have to check out. Just go walking around and exploring San Anselmo it’s cool!

Marin is so lovely and I hope you really enjoy, thrive and take advantage of it all and learn about how special it is. Mount Tam is a huge treasure and let’s you know you’re home or getting closer to it. It has a unique and mighty shape that changes from various directions and it can really make you feel something new each time.

Um …it’s cool … there’s decent shops, fun beer gardens like proof lab, and other decent restaurants. no place for good sushi in all of Marin ( sushi ran sucks so stop saying it’s good ). If you’re expecting big city food it’s not happening but sf is only a 10-15 minute drive without traffic. Morning commutes from the freeway are easy and fast, rarely any traffic into sf in the morning. If you’re into water sports like , kayaking or paddle boarding or surfing great ! Nice places to hike. Nice to just hang around downtown or shoreline hwy. the scary hilly narrow roads are why I didn’t move there. A lot of ex sf people moved there. Don’t go out on saturdays near shoreline hwy as it’s a traffic nightmare cause all of the Bay Area is going to Stinson beach.
