Lahaina's neighborhoods are still being rebuilt, and any guide to living here has to begin with that reality. The 2023 wildfire devastated much of historic Lahaina, including the Front Street area. In residential areas such as Wahikuli and Lahainaluna, some families have returned to rebuilt homes while nearby lots remain empty or under construction. Kahoma has its own residential streets and rebuilding challenges. These are communities with deep roots, not simply places waiting for new buyers.
For anyone considering a move, conditions can change from block to block. Check current access, utilities, rebuilding permits and insurance before making assumptions about a property. Front Street reopened to vehicle traffic in 2026, but that does not mean the surrounding commercial district has recovered. Respect for residents navigating a long rebuilding process matters here as much as any conventional housing checklist.
Lahaina is dominated by families living in historic cottages or farmhouses. There are also extremely wealthy tourists / second home / primary home mainland exiles who have built massive estates in the hills or beaches of Kaanapali and Lahaina proper. There are condos and apartments throughout the area but for the most part this is family time in small or large homes.
