What's it like to live in Kingston?

For a small city, Kingston has a lot going on - add in the nearby towns and you can have a great time - though you may have to work a little harder at building a social life than in a bigger city. Lots of good food and drink spots too.

You’re minutes from lots of hiking, kayaking, biking, etc. Drive an hour and your options are seemingly endless.

I’d recommend spending a week there if you can work remotely at your current job, getting a feel for the place. Relocating is a big deal.

Kingston is a great place if you love the outdoors but also want the amenities of an increasingly happening city. Hiking trails, winter skiing, boating of all varieties, excellent restaurant scene, lots of creative folks. And easy to get to NYC. My friends who visit me here from San Francisco, Atlanta, Austin, Vancouver, Mexico City have all been impressed by both the scenery and the culture.

I moved to a small town near Kingston, 4 years ago. I’m in Kingston multiple times every week, as that’s where all the services and shops are locally.

My advice for making friends is to pick 1 or 2 things you like, find a group doing that every week, and dedicate yourself to going EVERY WEEK. You don’t have to love it (though hopefully you do), but being in the same place with roughly the same people every week, friendships will likely start forming. This is especially important if you work from home.

There’s a dance scene (all kinds of partner dancing), bars, a new gay bar (Unicorn), bike rides, hiking, dog parks, music jams (lmk if you play ukulele!), exercise/yoga/Pilates studios, volunteer opportunities… you get the idea.

During the pandemic, loads of folks from New York City moved up to the Hudson Valley. So depending on where you are in Kingston, sometimes it can feel a little bit like Brooklyn Lite. Lots of artsy stuff happening. Of course, Kingston is also filled with the folks who have always lived there, of many different economic levels. So depending on where you live and what you do, that will somewhat determine your experiences.

I wouldn’t say it’s aggressive - it’s 2 hours north of the city, and that makes a big difference. New Yorkers are direct, but taken out of the city, our edges soften a little ;)

Really, visit for as long as you can, before deciding.
