What's it like to live in Destin?

The beaches are beautiful and you learn the area very quickly because of how small it is. However, when tourists are here, you have to plan everything around that. Traffic is horrible. For the beach, I only go early in the morning around 8am and then I’m out by 10ish because then that’s when all the tourists start coming in. For food, you have to eat out early, make reservations if you don’t want to eat early, plan on waiting or eat at home because restaurants get busy. Also, for food, grocery stores are avoided on Saturdays because that’s when tourists arrive. For service providers, I have found a good dentist and lash artist but that’s been it.

I’m actually looking to move out of Destin because I’m bored. I need more than what the city has to offer right now, which sucks because I absolutely love the beach.

What stage in life are you? (Have kids, retired, etc.) What do you like to do? (Fishing, hiking, eating, etc.) Whats your income level? Are you working age, need a job here, work remote, etc.? Destin is great for some people and not so much for others. It’s about as opposite of Chicago as you can get, so it would be helpful to know your motivation to leave to see if Destin would be a good fit.

As you can tell from the posts, the true locals will always be bitter that our little village is gone, and rightfully so, but that doesn’t mean you won’t still enjoy it here.

I lived there for 8 years, and moved away 6 years ago. We used to vacation from PCB to Destin every year and absolutely loved it, so decided to move there. I fairly quickly adapted to avoid traffic by doing all my errands and shopping as early as possible, always getting the first available appointment for medical, nails, hair, etc. I checked the weather every day in advance so I could avoid leaving home on a rain day during season. All that was fine, and I truly loved the transitional seasons when we'd get a random gorgeous day without all the tourist craziness. We just got really tired of having nothing to do but beach, bars, and crappy over-priced restaurants.
