Dated a girl from there many years ago. Without question, an amazing place to live. Downtown is great, tons of cool parks, two great movie theaters, pretty quick access to the highways and Detroit. Great schools.

Lots of professional athletes in that town too and coaches, but there tons of bungalows and homes under $1m that are occupied by individuals without wealth.

I never understood the hate. People are prideful of their towns, doesn’t matter if it’s Birmingham or Grand Rapids, or Ludington.

I grew up in the suburbs there, not like the ultra wealthy part but the general suburbs. Everyone was super nice and even older homes were well maintained. Could walk everywhere and had plenty to do growing up and plenty of family’s with similar age kids.

One of my best friends lived in the ultra wealthy side and always wanted to hang out at my house because he couldn’t get over how many people we would meet or run into just by going on a bike ride or hanging out at the park. It felt like a sitcom to him with how the whole neighborhood would know your name and strike up convos as you’re walking around. Halloween is S tier there too. Very good sense of community. I haven’t lived there since moving out for college but I hope it held onto all of that.

It seems like houses are really expensive in any of the metro Detroit cities. But the affordable side of Birmingham is on the east side of Woodward and then south of Maple. Aside from the new builds (because they’re tearing down the little houses to building these great big expensive new ones) the prices are comparable to Royal Oak.

My SO and I are childfree but we don’t have fancy jobs, we’re just two income. We bought our house before the pandemic and then when interest rates were low, refinanced.

As for what the people do around my area, working age people are two income households. But most of them are retired people who have lived in their house for their whole adult life.

I can’t really speak for the other wealthier parts of the city.
