What's it like to live in Albany?

It’s a nice small city! I like to call Albany great to live in and very boring to visit. We’re so close to nature: the Adirondacks, Berkshires, and Catskills are all within an hour. We’ve got great culture- lots of museums nearby and fun day trips. We’ve got decent food- especially Italian and Asian foods. We’ve got lots of options for living from walkable urban to little lakes and mountain homes all commutable to the city. We have a large white collar young professional workforce because the state is the big employer and lots of local colleges. But if you’re looking for Portland or Asheville or even Providence… small cities with big hip scenes… we’re not that. I love it here because heading to a library or on a day hike is my dream weekend. I find it very easy to make friends: were people with hobbies! State work (mostly) ends at 5 and then you head out… to play soccer, ice skate, take an art class… whatever. It’s affordable here. NYC still hasn’t found us. Our politics are generally very liberal and even the more MAGA towns are… generally east coast conservative, if that makes sense? It’s been a great place to raise a family. We’re always running into friends because “smallbany.”
But again I caution: we are not like… traditional fun city! You won’t be wowed by our lights. Were liveable small city life.

Born and raised. I love it here.
We got good food. LGBTQ friendly. Great history. Generally nice people who mostly want to be left alone (so we can come off mean). Couldn't tell you much about the night life because I am a cave dweller mostly. Married, kids are starting to move out. ETC.
A lot of the older business are closing making a lot of people here think the city is falling apart. Then ignore the fact that there are dozens OPENING too.
Do we have normal city problems? Homelessness? Crime? Yes of course. We always have. Is it a dangerous city? I dont think so. Just avoid walking in certain areas late at night. Mind your business and keep moving. Common sense.

Its also surrounded by other happening cities, troy and saratoga. Amtrak to nyc is nearby. A lot of decent bands, comedians, and productions roll through all year. A lot of breweries nowadays. Theaters and malls are closing, a lot of condemned housing in the city, but also a lot of building projects in rotation. The roads typically suck, and litter can be left unkempt. But the city’s appearance and geeeneral experience is charming nonetheless. Lots of paki/indian/halal food to boot w the italian/east asian establishments. Good amount of free events almost daily around the region. Unfortunately festivals like larkfest, pearlpalooza, art on lark (if it exists)) and even tulip fest have lacked some luster due to covid echoes but i hope to some revitalization in the future. Cultural festivals like blackfest, latinfest are strengthening this past year. I like it here, state parks all around, albany ppl arent truly the friendliest directly like someone said above but not mean. Surrounding areas you can find a townier feel even in Schenectady. I think given what you described about yourself you’ll find a life here.
